Regular Maintenance: Why visiting the chiropractor before you feel pain is crucial

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding chiropractic care is that you should only come see your chiropractor when you’re in pain. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Your body is built to make compensations. Muscles, joints and nerves work together to keep your body operating, even under less than ideal conditions.

In your nervous system, you can actually have a 30 percent decrease in function of a given nerve, and still not feel a single symptom. However, problems rarely stay at that 30 percent threshold. Once you get past that point, that’s when you’ll get back pain, migraines, vertigo or other symptoms that can put you out of commission.

Think of your body like a car. You can run with a little air out of your tires, or your oil level a little low and not see any noticeable problems. Let the car get too far along before you address the issue, and you might be stranded on the side of the road. Like your car, it’s important to perform regular maintenance on your body and nervous system. You can consider your chiropractor a mechanic for your body. Getting a chiropractic adjustment can be like an oil change.

When you keep proper air pressure in your tires, you’ll obviously help avoid a flat tire or something catastrophic. You will also notice some other side effects like better gas mileage. Similarly, there can be some unexpected advantages to a chiropractic adjustment. If your body is having even a little neurological dysfunction, you might find yourself having more energy, sleeping better, having better digestion or breathing better. If you like to golf, many of our patients go from playing 9 holes before seeing us, to playing 36 holes with the same amount of energy.

What we’re going for with these chiropractic maintenance visits is an improvement in quality of life. We want to make sure you’re operating at 100 percent. We also want to keep any severe pain issues from popping up. If it’s been a while since you’ve come in to see us, and it’s only because you haven’t felt any pain, stop by. Dr. Justin can take a look and make sure everything is working exactly as it should be.
